Who is 1 Walker?

 About 5 years ago, newly weds Ogie and Regine Alcasid decided to go on a journey. They embarked on a quest to get to know God through a weekly small group led by Bernard Marquez. Some of their friends — including Liza Martinez, Jaya, Sushi Reyes and Archie Castillo — joined them on their faith walk. Through weekly get-togethers, they read the Word of God and grew in their walk with Christ. Realizing that these friends love music just as they love God, Regine broached the idea of putting together a band dedicated to playing praise and worship music. Everyone was on board. Eventually, more singers and musicians hopped on with the same mission — Marnie Jereza, Manolo Tanquilut, Eugene Cailao, Zebedee Zuniga, Criss Beunviaje, Jem Florendo, Soc Mina, Michael Alba, JunJun Regalado and Nikko Rivera. Thus, “1 Walker” was born. Why 1 Walker? It is the address of where this journey began. The Bible verse “For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV)” also plays an important role in the band’s existence.

REGINE Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid Name it, Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez have achieved it all. But they don’t let the trappings of success turn into a trap. The Songwriter and the Songbird recognize the bigger “Star” in their lives—Jesus Christ. They will pay homage to the Lord in “Reborn: 1 Walker Worship Concert” on April 3, 7 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena (smtickets.com). Even if it’s no longer Holy Week, we should keep our faith burning. Let Ogs and Reg lead the way.

Here’s my tête-à-tête with Ogie : What’s more fulfilling—performing in a Christian concert or in your usual shows? Nothing compares to singing for the Lord. Doing a praise concert is different because you actually don’t sing for the audience. Our band leads the singing to worship our Creator. What made you and Regine put up a Christian band? Reg and I thought of putting up 1 Walker (our worship band) because we wanted to sing for the Lord in church. 1 Walker is a place where our faith grew. However, I think God had other plans. The Light of Jesus (religious community) of Bo Sanchez, through Randy Borromeo, invited our band to perform in the Kerygma conference last year and now they are producing our coming concert for Anawim Foundation.
