Even when she got married and bore a son, many people saw Regine Velasquez as having only slowed down with her career. After all, she still had regular TV shows, held hit concerts, and put out an album that turned Platinum recently.
But for the songbird, 2014 is when she stages a full comeback.
“May almost three years na I was able to be with my son, Nate, hindi ako full time (sa work). GMA was lenient with me, very understanding sila in that they gave me only projects I can do, ‘yung hindi masyadong ngaragan. Bihira yung time na umuuwi ako na tulog na si Nate.
“It’s only now na babalik ako full-time sa work, beginning with a soap that we’ll start doing in March,” she said to that effect in an interview.
Before that is “Voices of Love,” a back-to-back concert with Martin Nievera to be held at Mall of Asia Arena on Feb. 14. It’s a “repeat” that took years to realize after “Voices” in 2003 which was the last time they headlined a concert just by themselves. Like its predecessor which had a jampacked, four-night run in a 10,000 plus capacity venue in Metro Manila and toured the US and Canada in eight major cities, “Voices of Love” is expected to be huge.
“Talagang kantahan itong concert na ito, no-holds barred. Nakakagana especially at balanse na ngayon ang concert scene, di na ganun kadami ang shows by foreigners,” said Regine.
She is excited working with Martin again, whom she lauded as being a good friend and a sort of teacher to her.
“Kay Martin ko natutunan yung pagkanta na hindi ka humihinga between lines at times. Siya yung first superstar singer na naka-duet ko even when I was a nobody then, at siya din ang unang tumawag sa akin ng ‘Regine’ (her stage name).
“Martin is very generous. Kapag may show ako at nalaman niya, he volunteers himself to perform as guest. Sa kanya ko natutunan na to do your part in helping other artists, na kung isang kanta lang naman, ibigay mo na ng libre.
“As a person, hindi mo siya makikitaan na may problema. He doesn’t complain. And, of course, he’s a great dad, kita naman yon.”
On her full-time return to show business, Regine recognizes the many changes in the scene. She finds it harder to churn a hit since variety shows these days only allow a local artist to sing a single from an album once and only on home network. “Hindi ka makaronda,” she put it.
Then there’s the issue of people sharing an album in that “pag bumili ng isang kopya, isha-share to 100 people.” Buying songs online, she says, is still “for the young” at least in the Philippines, though she notes that the market of CD buyers is still there.
Regine is not disheartened by all these especially since she already has loyal fans. In fact, she is confident of doing a concert without her husband, singer Ogie Alcasid, this time around, since they have always had individual careers.
Will they have time for a Valentine date next month?
“He always makes an effort, kahit na nga minsan ay hindi on the day itself dahil may work ako or siya naman ang meron. Pero every Valentine’s Day, meron akong long-stemmed roses from him na kasing lalaki ng kamao ko, at laging may gift. These are simple things you remember.”
