Regine Velasquez soared in the air, literally, as she hit the high notes while singing “On the Wings of Love.”
A white cloth hung from the rafters served as her harness as she spun gracefully in the air.
This stunt was one of the highlights of Regine’s Silver Rewind concert held last night, January 5, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Concertgoers, very impressed with Regine’s performance, rewarded her with a standing ovation.
A PROMISE FULFILLED. Last November 16, Regine staged her Silver concert to celebrate her 26th year in showbiz. However, on that very day she contracted a virus that caused her to lose her voice.
As a result, the concert was cut short, prompting a tearful Regine and her equally tearful producers to restage the concert under better circumstances so as not to disappoint her loyal fans.
On January 5, Regine fulfilled this promise, and her fans showed up again, filling the Mall of Asia Arena to capacity.
At the start of the event, a video was shown containing clips from the November 16 concert.
It showed Regine, in tears, alternately apologizing to her fans and thanking them. At one point, she said, “Thank you for not booing me.”
But last night, the mood was different. At 9 p.m., Maestro Ryan Cayabyab took centerstage to conduct the Manila Symphony Orchestra.
Wearing a silver gown, Regine made a grand entrance as she performed “Where Have You Been (All My Life),” as well as “Shine.”
Halfway through the opening number, Regine was lifted up by her backup dancers.
The upbeat vibe continued as the singer performed “Shake Your Groove Thing” and “Hot Stuff.” The mood mellowed slightly when she gave her rendition of “Narito Ako.”
Regine addressed the huge crowd by saying, “And we are back at the Mall of Asia!”
The crowd welcomed her with thunderous applause.
She joked, “Welcome once again… Marami ang tumatawag sa concert na ito bilang Silver 2 the Repeat, Silver The Resbak, Silver Churvaness…”
But she turned serious as she told her fans: “Nagpapasalamat ako, I feel very, very blessed to be able to stage this show for all of you.
"Alam n’yo naman ang nangyari nung November, wag na nating balikan kasi 2013 na.
“I learned a lesson last year. It’s not about me and it’s not even about you. It’s about glorifying God and this whole show we dedicate to You.
“Pasasalamatan ko kayong lahat from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’d like to start with this song.”
She then serenaded the crowd with her song “Dadalhin Kita sa Aking Palasyo.”
Regine said that all the songs she would perform that night were her own recordings.
She had one qualifier: "Lahat ng kakantahin ko ay lahat recorded songs ko, except for this one song. Aangkinin ko na ang song na ito."
She then performed "Sirena" with Gloc9. Asia’s Songbird then made a fearless prediction: "I think 'Sirena' will be song of the year."
At this point, Regine kicked off her high heels, then later joked: “Pakipulot nga, mahal ‘yan!”
"PERFECT." The singer-actress continued to show her kengkoy side as she said in one of her spiels: “I really am very blessed dahil bukod sa magaling at pinagpipitagang akong dancer… walang kokontra… hindi ko na ipinapakita ang talent na yun dahil perfect na ako.
“I feel very blessed because I was given the opportunity to do a TV show and do movies… at ang gaguwapo lahat ng leading men ko! Nahalikan ko lahat yun!”
Her declaration elicited laughter from the crowd.
One segment of the show was dedicated to her movie's theme songs, such as “Pangarap Kong Ibigin Ka,” “Pangako” and “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw.”
Regine was joined in this segment by Rachelle Ann Go, Jaya, and singing trio La Diva.
Jaya told Regine, “We’re very happy you got your voice back and that we have your friendship."
Regine then turned to the young girls and encouraged them by saying, “I feel very proud of you. Kayo na ang susunod sa mga yapak namin.”
For their final song together, they all had their moments while hitting the high notes of the song “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going.”
When it was her turn, Jaya pretended as if she couldn't hit the notes but, of course, she did!
COMEDY PARTNERS. During one portion of the concert, Regine’s husband, Ogie Alcasid, went onstage. He was immediately met by Regine who quipped, “Uy, matangkad ka ngayon, ha!”
Ogie smiled good-naturedly and answered her with a compliment: “Ang ganda ng asawa ko.”
The singing couple then performed their version of “Hanggang Ngayon.”
Janno Gibbs also did a duet with the Songbird for the song “Magkasuyo Buong Gabi.” After the song, Janno told Regine, “Sorry malat ako.”
Ogie jokingly told the audience, “Pakihawakan n’yo ang tikets n’yo, uulitin natin ito.”
Ogie and Janno then did their trademark OJ segment, as they performed a song tracing the career and love life of Regine. The OJ tells in song form what is basically news, and is always a hit whenever the duo does this in GMA-7's Party Pilipinas.
The fun continued as Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola came out to perform “Gangnam Style.”
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS. During that segment, Regine went backstage and when she returned, she had on a black gown with a plunging V-neck design that reached down to her waist. Dancers waved feathered fans around her for this production number.
When she sang “Love Me Again,” the singer-actress said that this was one song that she would like to dedicate to everyone.
Regine reminisced about her humble beginnings. “Twenty-seven years na ako in this business. My father and my mother are celebrating this with me.
"Ang daming amateur contests na sinalihan ko, hanggang sa narinig ako ni Ronnie Henares na kumanta 'ko. Tuwang-tuwa ako noon noong nagpunta kami sa Hong Kong, and si Nanette Medved binigyan ako ng 50 dollars.
“I’d like to thank my husband Ogie kasi sabay naming ginawa si Nate [their son]. Ang pangit naman kung ako lang mag-isa.
“Thank you God for Nate.”
A photo and video montage of her beloved son was then shown onscreen as Regine performed “God Gave Me You.”
When Regine sang “Leader of The Band,” photos of Regine with her father Gerry were flashed onscreen. Tears streamed down her face as she went down the row where her father was seated and she hugged him tightly.
When she went back onstage, Regine was emotional as she told her parents: “I love you, Papa. I love you, Mama. I said earlier that this show is to glorify the Lord. Thank you, thank you, Lord, for being here tonight.”
A montage of Regine's past performances was shown as Regine sang “You Are My Song.”
A choir then entered the stage as Regine performed a powerful version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” As the song ended, fireworks lit up the stage and long silver strings dropped from the rafters.
For her encore, Regine thanked her sponsors and sang “What Kind of Fool Am I.”
Before she ended the concert at around 11:30 p.m., Regine announced that the coverage of Silver Rewind will be aired on GMA-7 on January 27.
