A royal musical roller coaster Leave it to Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Martin Nievera, Erik Santos, and Angeline Quinto, to enthrall fans with a musical extravaganza like no other. The four gathered at the Mall of Asia Arena for the first of a two-night gig last Feb. 13 and, from the get-go, it was obviously going to be a night of surprises. The show opened with the stars doing several hits by ’70s rock band Queen including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Somebody To Love.” The four then segued into Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up And Dance,” Adele’s “Hello,” and Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” perfectly bridging the past and the present. They also made an effort to put L-O-V-E front and center of the show with Martin facilitating the proposal of audience member Eric to his girlfriend Kathy. With the deal done, Martin went on to serenade the couple with OPM gems such as “Hanggang Kailan,” “Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin,” and “Ikaw.” Though she appeared reserved during the first few minutes of the show, Angeline made her mark when she sang “Kunin Mo Na Ang Lahat Sa Akin.”
In any case, our favorite part of the show was when the foursome did a medley of Eraserheads hits “Huling El Bimbo,” “Pare Ko,” “Ligaya,” and “Magasin,” with Ogie Alcasid and Vice Ganda adding to the fun. It was followed by a slew of tributes. The four saluted Nat King Cole and daughter Natalie by singing “Unforgettable,” “The Very Thought Of You,” “Inseparable,” “When I Fall In Love,” and “Starting Over Again.” They also honored the late star builder German Moreno. Martin was first to step up the stage singing Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This,” followed by Erik who performed Taylor Hick’s “Do I Make You Proud.” Angeline then sang Jordin Spark’s “This Is My Now,” followed by Regine’s rendition of Fantasia Barrino’s “I Believe.”
Regine and Angeline went on to pay homage to Whitney Houston singing “I Will Always Love You,” “Run To You,” and “I Have Nothing.” Angeline, seemingly overwhelmed having been able to perform alongside her idol, hugged Regine after. “You deserve to be on this stage,” Regine said of Angeline. Martin and Erik then gave tribute to Basil Valdez singing his hits “Hanggang Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan,” “Paano Ba Ang Mangarap,” “Kastilyon Buhangin,” “Ngayon At Kailan Man,” and “Ngayon.” The four got together onstage again for a medley of ’80s tunes including Tears For Fears’ “Shout,” Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock And Roll,” Simple Mind’s “Don’t You (Forget About Me,” Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” the Go-Go’s “Head Over Heels,” a-ha’s “Take On Me,” Bonnie Tyler’s “I Need A Hero,” and Michael Sembello’s “She’s A Maniac.”
Of course, the night would not be complete without Martin and Erik performing “This Is The Moment,” a number that marked important milestones in their respective careers. Regine and Angeline followed suit performing a duet of “What Kind Of Fool I Am.” Let’s just say the audience got their tickets’ worth; probably even more. --- by Paulyn Abando
